## Summary

Vercel's September AI Gateway report shows open-weight models handled 56% of all tokens routed through the gateway in August, the first time they've crossed the majority mark, up from just 7% in December 2025. Despite this token-share dominance, open-weight models captured only 14 cents of every dollar spent, while Anthropic's models took 64 cents of every dollar despite far lower token share, a figure that has never dropped below 61% since December 2025. Within Anthropic's own lineup, Fable 5 spend fell from 13.2% to 4.9% while cheaper Opus 5 rose to 22.5%, with most switched usage staying inside Anthropic rather than leaving. Z.ai's GLM-5.3-Flash tripled GLM-5.2's daily volume within five days of launch, while Google's Gemini 3 Flash lost most of its volume to competitors, dropping Google's overall gateway token share from 30% to 5%.

## Questions this post answers

### What percentage of tokens on Vercel's AI Gateway are now handled by open-weight models?

Open-weight models handled 56% of all tokens routed through Vercel's AI Gateway in August, the first time they accounted for a majority of monthly volume. Their share rose from just 7% in December 2025 to 13% by April, then to 36% in July, before crossing 50% in August, showing a consistent month-over-month climb in production usage.

_Track how open-weight model adoption is shifting production workloads on daily.dev._

### Why does Anthropic still dominate AI spend even though open-weight models process more tokens?

Anthropic captured 64 cents of every dollar spent through Vercel's AI Gateway in August despite open-weight models handling 56% of tokens, because open-weight models from providers like DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and Z.ai are generally much cheaper to run per token. Open-weight models accounted for only 14 cents of every dollar spent. Anthropic's spend share has never fallen below 61% since December 2025.

_Compare token volume against real spend before picking a model provider, a distinction daily.dev readers debate often._

### How did customer usage shift between Anthropic's Fable 5 and Opus 5 models?

Fable 5 fell from 13.2% of total Vercel AI Gateway spend in July to 4.9% in August, while cheaper Opus 5 climbed to 22.5%. Ninety percent of teams using Fable reduced usage, with more shifting to Opus 5 than any other model, since Opus handles similar workloads at roughly half the price, letting Anthropic retain the dollars even as customers moved to the cheaper option.

_Watching model migrations inside a single lab helps teams budget for their next LLM switch, something daily.dev surfaces well._
