Open Weights Is All You Need

More than 230 organizations signed the Open Weights and American AI Leadership letter urging Washington to protect the open-weight AI ecosystem. Kilo, an AI model routing platform, shares usage data showing open-weight models now account for 79.1% of all token usage on their platform as of July 2026, up from a small minority not long ago. The post argues that open and closed models serve complementary roles — closed frontier models excel at the hardest tasks while open weights win on cost, privacy, accuracy, and deployment flexibility for the remaining ~80% of workloads. Kilo positions itself as a neutral routing layer that connects developers to whichever model best fits each task, supporting both open and closed models without vendor lock-in.
