OpenAI attributes the efficiency gains to the models taking more direct paths through tasks, reducing token usage and costs. ## Content OpenAI has dropped prices across its GPT-5.6 model lineup and added a new speed tier. ## What changed **GPT-5.6 Luna** took the biggest cut: 80% cheaper, now $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens. At launch those were $1 and $6. OpenAI says Luna is now the most price-efficient model in its class - one developer noted it benchmarks comparably to GLM 5.2 and even edges out some Terra and Sol configurations at a fraction of the cost. **GPT-5.6 Terra** dropped 20%, landing at $2/$12 per million input/output tokens. **GPT-5.6 Sol** pricing stays the same at $5/$30, but gets a new Fast mode in the API offering up to 2.5x faster processing at twice the standard price, with no stated change to intelligence. It's aimed at time-sensitive coding, research, and agentic workloads. ## Why prices fell OpenAI attributes the reductions to serving efficiency improvements: kernel changes cut total serving cost by around 20%, and token-generation experiments improved efficiency by more than 15%. ## Downstream effects The Luna price cut flows through to a few other places. Auto-review in ChatGPT and Codex CLI is being upgraded from GPT-5.4 to GPT-5.6 Luna, which makes that feature roughly 10x cheaper to run. Usage quotas in Codex and ChatGPT Work also benefit, meaning more tasks fit under the same allowance. The updated pricing applies on Amazon Bedrock as well, mirroring OpenAI's first-party rates and counting toward existing AWS commitments. Terra and Luna are available in three US regions (N.
