OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, former president of Uber India and South Asia, as its first managing director for India, starting September. Singh will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations in India — OpenAI's second-largest market with 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. The hire is part of a broader push into India that includes new offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, plus partnerships with Pine Labs, JioHotStar, and Tata Group. The move comes amid intensifying competition from Anthropic, Google, Amazon, and domestic AI players like Sarvam, as well as growing geopolitical concerns around AI sovereignty following the US suspension of Anthropic's models for non-US users.
