# OpenAI models come to Google Cloud, putting them on all three major US clouds

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Google Cloud is adding OpenAI models to its Model Garden, making it the only hyperscale cloud offering Gemini, Claude, and GPT together. Three OpenAI models are rolling out in private preview: GPT-Astra for coding and research, GPT-6.1 Sol as a cheaper near-match, and GPT-6 Luna for everyday tasks. Codex is headed to the Model Garden and should arrive within weeks, per a report. Billing runs through Google Cloud Marketplace on a single invoice and counts toward existing committed spend. The deal became possible after Microsoft's OpenAI license turned non-exclusive on April 27, 2026; AWS had already added Codex to Bedrock by June.

## Content

OpenAI is putting its frontier models and Codex coding agent into Google Cloud's Model Garden. That makes its models available on all three of the biggest US cloud providers, and it makes Google Cloud the only hyperscaler offering OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models side by side.

## What's rolling out

Three models are arriving in an invite-only private preview:

- GPT-6 Astra, for demanding coding and research work
- GPT-6.1 Sol, which is described as coming close to Astra at lower cost
- GPT-6 Luna, for fast everyday tasks

General availability is planned in the coming weeks. OpenAI models are also expected to appear soon in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent.

## How customers buy and use them

Customers purchase through Google Cloud Marketplace and can count the spend against existing Google Cloud commitments, including Flexible Savings Plans. Usage lands on a single invoice, so there's no separate procurement step. Regulated customers can run the models inside Google Cloud's access controls and data governance tools while building agentic workflows.

Developers can also connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to the Gemini platform for inference. Zero Data Retention options are coming soon.

OpenAI's pitch is simple: enterprises can use its technology where they already build.

## Why this was possible now

The deal only opened up after April 27, 2026, when Microsoft's license to OpenAI's technology became non-exclusive and Microsoft stopped paying OpenAI a revenue share on Azure resales. Amazon Web Services moved first, with Codex on Bedrock by June. Microsoft is still OpenAI's primary cloud partner and gets new products first.

Google is a direct OpenAI competitor, which makes this a little odd. It asked the FTC in December 2024 to break up the Microsoft exclusivity, and it already supplies OpenAI with computing capacity under a 2025 deal.

The cloud market is the backdrop. Anthropic got 47% of its 2025 revenue through Amazon's and Google's cloud platforms, according to its IPO filing, and Google's cloud revenue growth accelerated to about 82% in the second quarter. Being the one place that carries all three major closed models is a strong card for Google to hold.

## Questions this post answers

### Why can Google Cloud and AWS suddenly offer OpenAI models when Microsoft used to have exclusivity?

Microsoft's license to OpenAI's technology turned non-exclusive on April 27, 2026, and Microsoft stopped collecting a revenue share on Azure resales of OpenAI models. That opened the door for other clouds; AWS added Codex to Bedrock by June, and Google Cloud followed by adding OpenAI models to its Model Garden. Microsoft still remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner and gets new products first.

### Which OpenAI models is Google Cloud adding to its Model Garden?

Google Cloud's Model Garden is rolling out three OpenAI models in private preview: GPT-Astra for demanding coding and research tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol which approaches Astra's performance at lower cost, and GPT-6 Luna for fast everyday work. Codex is also headed to the Model Garden and is expected to arrive within weeks.

### Is OpenAI's Codex available on AWS or Google Cloud yet?

Yes. Codex reached Amazon Web Services first, landing on Bedrock by June, and it is also headed to Google Cloud's Model Garden with an expected arrival within weeks. This followed Microsoft's OpenAI license becoming non-exclusive, which let other hyperscalers offer OpenAI's models and tools.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 83 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-22).

**TL;DR:** Discussion centers on skepticism about IP protection (distillation risk) when OpenAI's models run on Google infrastructure, alongside broader speculation about shifting competitive/business dynamics between the major AI labs and cloud providers.

**Sentiment:** 10% positive · 55% mixed · 35% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some argue contracts and legal/reputational risk make Google unlikely to misuse or distill competitor model weights.
- Enterprises benefit because they can use existing GCP spend commitments and avoid routing through multiple clouds for zero-data-retention deals.
- Google already hosts Anthropic's models without apparent issue, suggesting this kind of multi-tenant hosting arrangement is viable.

**The pushback**

- Concern that Google could access API traffic or (input, output) pairs regardless of weight-level protections, enabling distillation.
- Some see this as evidence Google's cloud business is prioritized over DeepMind/Gemini, undermining confidence in Google's own model ambitions.
- Skepticism that Microsoft's 'primary cloud partner' framing is just contractual language rather than a meaningful commitment.
- Doubt about how much the 'draw down GCP commitments' clause really matters for Google's booked revenue.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Debate split between technical worries about model distillation/IP leakage and more neutral-to-positive takes on the business logic of multi-cloud model distribution.

**Hottest debate:** Whether Google could use its hosting access (API traffic, logs) to effectively distill or learn from OpenAI's models despite contractual and technical safeguards.

**Open questions**

- Will OpenAI's models run on Google's TPUs or on Nvidia GPUs within Google Cloud?
- Does hosting competitor models signal reduced internal investment/confidence in Gemini and DeepMind?
- How will Google's revenue recognition actually be affected by customers redirecting committed GCP spend to OpenAI model purchases?

**Highlights**

> How are they trusting Google not to destill them

> Doesn’t really matter what happens at the GPU level when Google can see all the API traffic.
> — [binlog on hackernews](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50184757)

> Sergey better really go into "founder mode" or else Thomas Kurian (head of GCP) will continue to eat Deepmind's lunch. Between selling TPUs to external companies and now hosting competitor models, Gemini just doesnt have the full faith of the Alphabet capital allocators, and I can't really blame them. A mature company like google would rather just expand their extremely profitable cloud business rather than dump billions into a black hole on the off chance they achieve RSI or superintelligence or whatever.

> > Enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments will be able to draw down their GCP commitments for these purchases. This is a fairly big move by Google... It means revenue they have already booked and reported to shareholders they now might have to give away - potentially all of it. Bean counters hate that!

> I don't understand all the wild speculation and question here - openai is selling a shit ton of inference through third parties. these third parties want to provide inference to their customers who use gcp (and don't want to also inference through bedrock or azure ai foundary. these are all zdr engagements and thus "enterprise" contracts. basically it boils down to - anthropic already provides inference direct through GCP, Azure, and AWS - so to compete openai is doing the same.
