# OpenAI's Grid Protectors Program will cut data center power use when Georgia's grid is strained

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

OpenAI has launched the Grid Protectors Program, under which its future compute campuses will cut electricity use when the local grid is strained. Georgia is the first test, at a planned 3.2GW campus in Effingham County. OpenAI agreed with Georgia Power to provide up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response, roughly what 700,000 homes use, and will pay the full cost of power lines and electric service for the campus. Georgia Power expects its large-load agreements, including the one for Project Camellia, to save customers about $950 million a year starting in 2029, and estimates a typical residential customer would save at least $15 a month.

## Content

OpenAI has launched the Grid Protectors Program. Under it, the company's future compute campuses will reduce their electricity use when the local grid is under strain. Georgia is the first test.

## The Georgia pilot

The pilot site is a planned 3.2GW campus in Effingham County, Georgia. OpenAI has agreed with Georgia Power to provide up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response at busy times. That is roughly what 700,000 homes use.

OpenAI says it will pay the full cost of the power lines and electric service for the campus.

## What customers might save

Georgia Power expects its large-load agreements, including the one for Project Camellia, to save customers about $950 million a year starting in 2029. It estimates a typical residential customer would save at least $15 a month.

## Limits

OpenAI is upfront that flexibility is not a substitute for building new power plants and transmission lines. It has not named any sites beyond Georgia, even though it describes the program as national in scope.

The real test is whether a campus of that size actually throttles back when the grid needs it, and the savings figures are Georgia Power's projections, not results.

## Questions this post answers

### How much power will OpenAI's Georgia data center campus provide back to the grid during peak demand?

OpenAI agreed with Georgia Power to provide up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response at busy times, roughly equivalent to what 700,000 homes use. This is part of the Grid Protectors Program at a planned 3.2GW campus in Effingham County, Georgia, OpenAI's first pilot site for the program. OpenAI will also pay the full cost of power lines and electric service for the campus.

### How much money will Georgia Power customers save from OpenAI's large-load data center agreements?

Georgia Power projects its large-load agreements, including the one covering OpenAI's Project Camellia campus, will save customers about $950 million a year starting in 2029. A typical residential customer is estimated to save at least $15 a month. These figures are Georgia Power's own projections rather than confirmed results.
