# OpenAI's 'Sign in with ChatGPT' turns your Plus subscription into a dev tool pass

**[Trends](https://daily.dev/sources/trends)** · 2 min read · 3 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

OpenAI has rolled out a 'Sign in with ChatGPT' feature letting users authenticate with their existing ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription inside third-party developer tools, avoiding separate API billing. Over 60 partner products support it already, including Devin (confirmed live across Cloud, Desktop, and CLI), OpenCode, and Lovable. Developer reaction has been largely positive, with the framing that users can now bring their already-paid-for tokens into any supporting app. Unanswered questions remain around how Plus subscription rate limits translate when a third-party tool is making the API calls on the user's behalf. The move is being compared to how 'Sign in with Google' became broad infrastructure, with OpenAI positioning ChatGPT subscriptions as an identity and billing layer across the AI tooling ecosystem.

## Content

OpenAI announced at DevDay that ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can now spend their existing plan allowance inside third-party tools. They no longer have to pay separately through the API or a service's own credits.

The feature builds on Sign in with ChatGPT, which launched in beta in July and until now only handled identity and account linking. Sixteen launch partners are named, including OpenCode, Devin, Amp, Warp, Notion and Vercel. Lovable is listed as coming soon. Sign in, and the app draws on your included usage.

Users can set weekly caps per app in ChatGPT settings. Once a cap is hit, usage stops. It does not roll over to the partner's own billing.

Some tools had already done something similar informally. Dactyl and OpenClaw let people authenticate with their Codex/ChatGPT accounts to avoid separate token costs. This version is officially supported.

## What partners say

- **Devin:** Cognition says eligible Plus or Pro users can sign in and use that plan for all OpenAI model usage in Devin Cloud, Devin Desktop and Devin CLI.
- **v0:** Users can connect a ChatGPT Plus or Pro account and build with their ChatGPT tokens.
- **Notion:** A Plus or Pro subscription now covers AI usage in Notion.
- **Amp:** @beyang thanked OpenAI for making this officially supported. He also says inference through Sign in with ChatGPT seems faster than the legacy way of connecting a ChatGPT subscription. If you linked a sub to Amp before launch, he suggests going to model routing settings, opening "Connect Your ChatGPT Plan" and deactivating the old connection.

## Why indie developers care

The part that interests me most is what this does for small apps. @petergyang says letting users bring their own ChatGPT plan makes a lot of indie apps viable. He has a language-learning app he hadn't planned to launch because of API costs, and this changes that. He hopes it reaches non-enterprise users soon. @HamelHusain flagged the same idea: people sign into your app and use tokens they already pay for.

The reaction from users has been enthusiastic. @trikcode's take was that you already pay for ChatGPT and shouldn't have to pay again inside the coding agent. That seems like a fair reading of why this matters.

## Questions this post answers

### What is OpenAI's Sign in with ChatGPT feature for developer tools?

It is a login feature that lets ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscribers use their existing subscription directly inside third-party apps instead of paying separately for API usage. It covers over 60 partner products, including Devin, OpenCode, and Lovable, with Cognition confirming Devin support is live across Cloud, Desktop, and CLI. No separate billing or token purchase is required.

_Developers evaluating this shift in AI tool billing can follow updates on daily.dev as details emerge._

### Do ChatGPT Plus rate limits still apply when using Sign in with ChatGPT inside a third-party app like Devin?

This remains unclear. Plus subscriptions carry rate limits, but how those limits translate when a third-party tool such as Devin is making the API calls on a user's behalf has not been fully explained; marketing language promises 'no little rules,' but this has not been tested at scale in production workflows yet.

_Anyone relying on this integration for real workloads can track clarifications on daily.dev as they surface._

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 5 discussions and 49 comments across x (as of 2026-10-02).

**TL;DR:** Builders are excited that letting users bring their own ChatGPT plan could make small, API-cost-constrained apps free or viable, though several push back on the business-model and reliability implications.

**Sentiment:** 45% positive · 40% mixed · 15% skeptical

**The case for**

- Removes the API cost burden for indie developers, making free or low-cost apps viable.
- Lets builders stop selling tokens and instead focus on the workflow/value they add.
- Effectively subsidizes inference costs since usage draws from a plan the user already pays for.

**The pushback**

- Squeezes traditional SaaS margins since apps can no longer easily charge for AI credits.
- Ties an app's reliability to the user's shared ChatGPT quota, so hitting their cap looks like the app is broken.
- Some see it as a distribution/growth play by OpenAI (like Sign in with Apple) rather than a pure developer favor.
- Early rollout has bugs, like 400 errors on native apps that only work via the web app.

**By community**

- x (mixed): Some frame this as a huge unlock for indie builders and open source tools, while others debate whether it kills SaaS margins or is really just a distribution play for OpenAI; a separate thread shows early technical hiccups with sign-in on native apps.

**Hottest debate:** Whether bring-your-own-plan helps small developers by subsidizing inference, or ultimately undermines SaaS companies' ability to charge margin on AI features.

**Open questions**

- How will shared quota conflicts be handled when a user's plan is drawn on by multiple connected apps simultaneously?
- What happens to billing and account details when usage crosses into this shared-plan model?
- Will there be visibility or kill-switch controls in ChatGPT settings for revoking an app's access mid-session?

**Highlights**

> @TheNikhilBedi @petergyang The idea is to… make SaaS products unable to make money? I really like the approach, I think there is something here that could create alignment between model/inference companies and product companies… but the other side of the coin is SaaS loses the ability to make margin on

> @TheNikhilBedi @petergyang I’m saying that because this competes with the SaaS company selling AI Credits as part (or instead of) a sub. If I make an AI-native CMS, I can charge for AI actions within my app. But if I adopt the OpenAI subscription, I can’t do that without it being a bad deal (my customers

> @petergyang The catch is that the user's plan becomes a shared data allowance: your language app now draws from the same quota as their coding agent, their Dots and every other connected app, in the same week OpenAI halved Pro usage. The indie developer's API bill goes to zero, but the

> @petergyang the catch isn't the cost, it's the failure case: once their plan is the fuel, your rate limit is someone else's quota, and 'out of usage' lands inside your app mid-task. give that state its own copy and retry, or their limit reads as your bug.

> @petergyang not really excited by Dots tbh but yes - the sign-in with GPT feature can be really positive for the ecosystem if companies building product can stop selling tokens and only focus on helping their users make the most of the tokens they already paid via their subscription
