# OpenClaw Enterprise: an open-source control plane for governing persistent AI agents

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

OpenClaw, the self-hosted AI agent project created by Peter Steinberger, has launched OpenClaw Enterprise (OCE), an open-source control plane for governing persistent AI agents in enterprise environments. Announced by the OpenClaw Foundation with Red Hat, Nvidia, and OpenAI as backers, OCE positions itself as 'Kubernetes for agents,' offering centralized deployment, namespace isolation, permission management, and audit logging. It runs on Kubernetes infrastructure to give IT departments answers about who deployed what and what agents can access. The project is still pre-1.0, with key pieces like external gateway admission and workload authentication unfinished, meaning it isn't yet ready for company-wide rollout despite the notable backing.

## Content

OpenClaw started as a self-hosted AI agent project created by Peter Steinberger. It passed 100,000 GitHub stars, and then OpenAI hired him. Now it has a version aimed at companies: OpenClaw Enterprise, or OCE.

The OpenClaw Foundation announced it in collaboration with Red Hat, Nvidia, and OpenAI. Nvidia's own account congratulated the community and pointed to NVIDIA OpenShell as an open source option for organizations. Steinberger's @steipete account amplified both announcements.

## What it is

OCE is an open-source control plane for running persistent agents inside enterprise environments. The pitch is blunt: think of it as Kubernetes for agents. It runs on Kubernetes infrastructure and handles the things IT departments ask about first:

- centralized deployment of agents
- namespace isolation between them
- permission management
- audit logging

## Why it exists

Enterprise IT's default answer to agent platforms has been to ban them. Persistent agents that act on their own, with access to real systems, are hard to justify when nobody can say who deployed what, what it can touch, or what it did last night. OCE is an attempt to answer those questions with infrastructure rather than policy memos.

## Caveats

It's still pre-1.0, and several pieces aren't finished, including external gateway admission and workload authentication. Those aren't minor gaps. Authentication for workloads is exactly what a security team will want to see working before signing off. So this is worth watching and probably worth testing, but not something to roll out company-wide yet.

The backing is what makes it interesting. Red Hat knows how enterprises adopt Kubernetes, Nvidia is invested in where agents run, and OpenAI is on board too. If they put real weight behind it, agent governance could end up as a standard layer rather than a pile of one-off scripts.

## Questions this post answers

### What is OpenClaw Enterprise (OCE) and what does it do?

OpenClaw Enterprise is an open-source control plane for running persistent AI agents inside enterprise environments, built on Kubernetes infrastructure. It provides centralized deployment of agents, namespace isolation between them, permission management, and audit logging, positioning itself as 'Kubernetes for agents' so IT teams can track who deployed an agent, what it can access, and what it did.

### Is OpenClaw Enterprise ready for production use in a company?

No, it is still pre-1.0 with several unfinished pieces, including external gateway admission and workload authentication. Workload authentication in particular is something a security team will want working before sign-off, so it is considered worth testing but not ready for a company-wide rollout yet.

_Anyone evaluating agent governance tools can track OpenClaw Enterprise's maturity on daily.dev before committing._

### Who is backing the OpenClaw Enterprise project?

The OpenClaw Foundation announced OpenClaw Enterprise in collaboration with Red Hat, Nvidia, and OpenAI. Nvidia also pointed to its own NVIDIA OpenShell as an open source option for organizations, and OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, who now works at OpenAI after his project passed 100,000 GitHub stars, amplified both announcements.
