# Opening up Mali T720

**[Collabora Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/collabora)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Collabora engineers Alyssa Rosenzweig and Tomeu Vizoso have reverse-engineered the Mali T720 and T820 GPUs and added support for them in the upstream Panfrost Mesa driver. Key challenges included implementing non-hierarchical tiling (replacing the hierarchical tiler used on higher-end Mali GPUs), handling 'interpipe register aliasing' in the Midgard compiler, and supporting the simplified single framebuffer descriptor instead of the multiple framebuffer descriptor. With these changes, T720 and T820 now reach feature parity with other supported Mali GPUs, and Panfrost is ready for daily use on Mali GPUs from T720 to T860. All code is upstream in Mesa.

## Questions this post answers

### Which Mali GPUs are supported by the Panfrost driver in upstream Mesa?

Panfrost in upstream Mesa supports Mali GPUs from T720 to T860. T720 and T820 were added after reverse-engineering work that addressed non-hierarchical tiling, interpipe register aliasing in the Midgard compiler, and single framebuffer descriptor support. Devices like Allwinner H6 and Amlogic S912 boards are among those that benefit from this support.

### What is interpipe register aliasing in Mali T720 GPU architecture?

Interpipe register aliasing is a feature of simplified Mali GPUs like the T720 where texture registers are diffused into the work and load/store register spaces, rather than existing as a separate third set. On standard Midgard GPUs, work, load/store, and texture registers are three distinct sets. This aliasing required specific changes to the Panfrost compiler to fix texture-related issues.
