Cyble Research and Intelligence Labs (CRIL) has uncovered Operation FanTrap, a large-scale cybercrime ecosystem exploiting the FIFA World Cup 2026. Nearly 4,000 fraudulent domains were identified targeting fans with ticket scams, VIP access fraud, pirated streaming lures, and credential theft. The operation heavily targets Chinese-speaking audiences using zh- and cn- prefixed domains, while Telegram and WhatsApp serve as private transaction layers for payment fraud and identity harvesting. Dark web activity includes alleged leaks of 150,000+ football-related passport records. The attack lifecycle spans infrastructure preparation, victim acquisition, engagement, data collection, and monetization. Security teams are advised to implement domain monitoring, takedown workflows, and dark web visibility to counter the ongoing threat.
