# Oracle simplifies migrating legacy databases off IBM mainframes with support for EBCDIC

**[InfoWorld](https://daily.dev/sources/infoworld)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Oracle has added EBCDIC character set compatibility features to Oracle AI Database, targeting enterprises migrating legacy workloads off IBM mainframes. The new functionality addresses two core technical blockers: accurate EBCDIC-to-ASCII character encoding conversion and preservation of EBCDIC binary sort ordering, which COBOL applications implicitly rely on. Industry consultants broadly acknowledge the features solve a genuine, long-standing migration barrier. However, they caution that the announcement is a compatibility repair rather than a modernization solution, and that it does not address mainframe resilience, uptime, or disaster recovery concerns. A recurring concern is vendor lock-in: by abstracting legacy EBCDIC behavior behind Oracle's ecosystem, enterprises may simply trade IBM dependency for Oracle dependency rather than eliminating technical debt.
