A hands-on review of the ORICO 8848U4, a 4-bay USB4 NVMe SSD enclosure tested on Linux. The device uses Thunderbolt PCIe tunneling, causing drives to appear as native NVMe namespaces rather than USB storage. Benchmark results on ext4 show sequential reads of 729 MB/s and writes of 669 MB/s per bay, with real-world 5GB file transfers completing in ~4.5 seconds. NTFS performance is significantly worse due to Linux's FUSE-based ntfs-3g driver overhead. Key limitations include no RAID support, no passthrough port for daisy-chaining, and no fan speed control. At $219 for a diskless enclosure, it's best suited for video editors or users with spare NVMe drives needing fast desk-side storage.
