DigitalOcean has launched model synthesis in Public Preview on its Inference Engine — a server-side tool that runs a user-defined panel of models in parallel and uses a synthesizer model to combine their outputs. Benchmarked on DRACO (100 deep-research tasks), an all-open-source GLM 5.2 + Kimi K2.6 panel scored 65.65% quality at $0.83/task, outperforming Fable 5 (62.21% at $1.59/task) and every other single model tested. Key findings: synthesizer choice matters more than panel size, the best two-model panel matched a three-model panel, and open-source combinations can beat frontier models on both quality and cost. The tool supports optimized presets (Budget, Balanced, Quality) or fully custom panel/synthesizer configurations via a single API call.
