Attackers exploited the fact that HTS failed to verify whether email addresses matched the targeted Instagram accounts, allowing them to obtain password reset links and bypass two-factor authentication. The breach began around April 17, 2026, and was discovered by Meta on May 31. After disabling the HTS tool and invalidating all generated reset links, Meta enrolled affected accounts in mandatory security checkpoints and required password resets. Compromised data potentially includes contact info, dates of birth, posts, direct messages, and linked accounts.
