# Over half of PC gamers are still on 1080p in 2026, and the reason isn't the monitors

## Summary

Steam Hardware Survey data from June 2026 shows 51% of PC gamers still use 1080p displays. While 1440p monitors have become affordable (entry-level options under $200), the real barrier is GPU VRAM pricing. Most hardware experts recommend at least 12GB VRAM for smooth 1440p gaming, yet 8GB remains the most common configuration. GPUs with 12GB VRAM start at around $409 and climb well past $600, driven largely by the ongoing DRAM crisis. This has effectively priced out budget and mid-range gamers from making the resolution jump, turning what was once a straightforward upgrade path into a significant financial decision.
