# Particle permutation task can be tackled by quantum but not classical computers, study finds

**[Phys.org](https://daily.dev/sources/phys)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers demonstrated that quantum computers can determine whether particle permutations are even or odd without labeling each particle distinctly, a task impossible for classical computers. The breakthrough uses quantum entanglement to substitute for classical labels: while classical systems need as many unique labels as particles, quantum systems can solve the problem with fewer distinguishable states by starting particles in an entangled state. This work, grounded in group theory and representation theory of permutation groups, provides another concrete example of quantum advantage and opens pathways for developing task-specific quantum algorithms.
