PCIe 5.0 SSDs offer sequential read/write speeds up to 15,000 MB/s, but these gains don't translate to real-world benefits for most users. Gaming relies on random IOPS rather than sequential speeds, and Gen4 SSDs perform just as well as Gen5 for gaming workloads. DirectStorage adoption remains too low to change this. The two workloads that genuinely benefit from Gen5 speeds are heavy productivity tasks (video editing, 3D rendering, local LLM training) and large file transfers involving hundreds of GBs of data. Thermal management is also a concern, as Gen5 drives run hot and may require aftermarket cooling. For the average user, Gen4 remains the practical choice.
