The US Department of Defense has awarded Dell Federal Systems a five-year, $9.7bn contract to consolidate Microsoft software licensing across the entire US military, intelligence community, and Coast Guard. The deal replaces a fragmented patchwork of separately negotiated Microsoft 365 and cloud subscriptions with a single enterprise-wide buying arrangement. The Pentagon projects annual savings of $422m by eliminating duplicative licensing spend. Dell acts as prime contractor and managed-services integrator, while Microsoft is the underlying software vendor. The contract runs from June 2026 through May 2031. The award has drawn political scrutiny given Dell CEO Michael Dell's proximity to the Trump administration.
