# Personal Agent Protocol: an open standard for how personal agents deal with businesses

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new open standard called Personal Agent Protocol (PAP) has been announced, aiming to give personal AI agents a common way to interact with businesses for purchases, bookings, and support. Jeff Weinstein introduced the effort, with Stripe named alongside the announcement, and Meta and Sierra reportedly developing the standard together with other unnamed industry partners. No technical specification, timeline, or full partner list has been shared yet.

## Content

Sierra and Meta are developing the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP), an open standard for how personal AI agents authenticate with businesses and what those businesses let them do. Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart are working on it too. A v0.1 specification is due this month.

The announcement drew quick amplification from people close to the companies involved. @jeff_weinstein introduced PAP as "an open standard for how personal agents interact with businesses," and @btaylor described it as a standard Meta and Sierra are building with industry partners. @yoheinakajima and @tobi both reshared those posts.

## How sessions work

Sessions build on OAuth. An agent can start as a guest and get read-only or write access once the customer signs in. The session persists across channels and interaction modes: a website, APIs exposed through MCP or OpenAPI, or a business's own agent.

## What's left out

Payments are deferred. They're planned as a future extension, not part of the initial spec.

## Competing standards

PAP isn't the only effort in this space. Stripe and Shopify are also part of Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, so the same companies are backing overlapping standards. It's too early to say which one wins out, or whether they end up converging.

No European retailer, bank or payment company has joined. The protocol also has no carve-out from Europe's strong customer authentication rules for agent-approved payments, which matters once payments are added.

## Questions this post answers

### What is the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP) that Sierra and Meta are building?

It is an open standard defining how personal AI agents authenticate with businesses and what actions those businesses permit the agents to take. Sessions build on OAuth, allowing an agent to start as a guest with read-only access and upgrade to write access once the customer signs in, persisting across websites, MCP or OpenAPI-exposed APIs, and a business's own agent. Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart are participating, with a v0.1 specification due this month. Payments are deferred to a future extension.

### How does PAP differ from Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol for AI agent payments?

Both are competing, overlapping standards for AI agents interacting with businesses, and Stripe and Shopify back both simultaneously. PAP, backed by Sierra and Meta, defers payments to a future extension, while Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol addresses agent-driven transactions directly. It is too early to tell which standard wins or whether they converge, and no European retailer, bank or payment company has joined either effort yet.
