# pg-java rewrites the PostgreSQL driver, Valhalla lands in JDK 28 early access

**[Java Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/java_digest)** · 4 min read · 6 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Two independent groups shipped ground-up PostgreSQL drivers this week, both built with heavy AI assistance and both betting on virtual threads over the classic JDBC event model. Project Valhalla hit a real milestone as value classes and primitive patterns merged into JDK 28 early-access builds. Oracle committed to a concrete post-quantum crypto backport schedule for every supported LTS release, and Datadog published a genuinely clever JVM startup optimization. Meanwhile Gradle 9.7 plus IntelliJ 2026.2 finally fixed the industry's most annoying IDE behavior: one broken build script blacking out tooling for an entire multi-module project.

## pg-java: a from-scratch PostgreSQL driver, written mostly by Claude

The pgjdbc maintainer built a new pre-release PostgreSQL driver that treats the wire protocol as the primary API and bolts JDBC on top as a compatibility layer, rather than the other way around. It uses ReentrantLock instead of synchronized so blocking I/O doesn't pin virtual threads, streams results through pull cursors instead of buffering, and ships a batch-insert rewrite using unnest arrays that hits roughly 2x throughput over the naive path. The kicker: it was written almost entirely by Claude over six weeks — about 1,400 commits, 52K lines of Java, 43K lines of tests — guided by an AGENTS.md file and 22 architecture decision records, and it already passes 6,851 of pgjdbc's 7,331 upstream test cases. Not on Maven Central yet; needs Java 21. [Read more](https://daily.dev/feed-by-ids?id=SOaGD6m0G&id=Iyswltsgp)

## Valhalla value types land in JDK 28 early access

JEP 401 (value classes and objects) and JEP 539 (primitive types) have both merged, meaning primitive classes and primitive patterns are now available as a preview if you grab a JDK 28 early-access build. After years of Valhalla being a thing you read about, this is the point where you can actually download it and kick the tires. JEP 540, a lightweight incubating JSON parsing API with no third-party dependency, is also targeted for JDK 28. [Read more](https://daily.dev/feed-by-ids?id=dwhxxZEqn&id=JniLLkba8)

## Oracle locks in a post-quantum crypto backport schedule through 2027

JDK 27 gets hybrid post-quantum TLS 1.3 key exchange next month, but the bigger news is for everyone stuck on older releases. Oracle's July 2026 roadmap commits to backporting comparable PQC capabilities to JDK 25, 21, 17, 11, and 8, with a hard deadline of end of 2027. Oracle is also moving Java security updates from quarterly to monthly starting in 2027, which changes how most shops will need to plan patch cycles. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/dwhxxZEqn)

## Gradle 9.7 and IntelliJ 2026.2 fix all-or-nothing sync

Previously, one broken build script anywhere in a multi-project Gradle build would kill IDE autocomplete and highlighting for every subproject. Resilient sync uses Gradle's BuildController.fetch(...) Tooling API call (introduced in 9.3) to return partial models plus structured failures instead of throwing everything away. As of 9.7, sync still honestly reports failure, but every part that succeeded keeps streaming to the IDE — meaning you can fix a broken build.gradle with IDE assistance still working. Requires Gradle 9.7+ and IntelliJ 2026.2+; the capability lives in Gradle itself, so Eclipse, NetBeans, and VS Code's Gradle tooling could pick it up too. ## Also notable

- **Datadog cuts APM startup overhead 24% with a trie packed into a JVM string constant:** ClassNameTrie encodes a prefix trie as a single string constant loaded via one ldc instruction, avoiding I/O and data-structure construction during the JIT-cold premain phase, delivering nearly 5x faster class-matching than the old code-based approach and a 24% total startup savings in a real Spring Boot app. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/FoGKAaHmP)
- **Databricks open-sources Metals v2, and it's reshaping their IDE mix:** Databricks' Bazel-scale Java/Scala language server rewrite hits a p50 time-to-interactive-index of 8.7 seconds across a 26-million-line codebase, and since rolling it out, Cursor's share of weekly active IDE users at Databricks jumped to 92% versus 12% for IntelliJ. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/iHgtGi5WE)
- **DuckDB beats hand-rolled Java loops for Spring Batch aggregation by up to 8x:** A single DuckDB SQL statement outperforms an in-memory HashMap transform step by roughly 6x at 10 million rows and 8x at 50 million rows, thanks to columnar vectorization and zero per-row object allocation. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/Fozy2ZFEY)
- **Floci fills the gap LocalStack left behind:** The open-source multi-cloud emulator, built on a GraalVM native image via Quarkus, boots in 24ms with 13MB idle memory and is picking up steam as LocalStack's community edition shutdown pushes teams toward alternatives. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/SAJK9Qne5)
- **Memory alignment can cost you up to 100% on large SIMD vectors:** Benchmarks on x64 AVX512 and Aarch64 NEON show misaligned 64-byte vector loads/stores that straddle cacheline boundaries get split into two memory accesses, and since JDK 26's Vector API gives no way to query array alignment, off-heap MemorySegments with explicit alignment are the only reliable fix.
