# PHP runtime written in Rust

## Summary

Turbine is a high-performance PHP application server written in Rust that embeds PHP directly via the PHP embed SAPI, replacing the traditional Nginx + PHP-FPM + OPcache stack with a single binary. It eliminates inter-process communication overhead and offers two worker modes: process mode (NTS, fork-based, crash-isolated) and thread mode (ZTS, in-memory channels, maximum throughput). A built-in multi-layered security sandbox written in Rust provides execution whitelisting, path-traversal guards, heuristic SQL/code injection filters, and per-IP behavior guards with ~500 ns total overhead. Additional features include ACME auto-TLS, virtual hosting, OPcache preload across all workers, hot reload, Prometheus metrics, Brotli/Zstd/Gzip compression, and support for Laravel, Symfony, Phalcon, and WordPress. The project is under active development and not yet production-ready.

> Maybe it can be a container runtime to have it behind something like traefik.

> Hey Guys, I'm the developer of Turbine. My idea is for Turbine to be something like Franken, but I'm trying to make it as compatible as possible. I still have some performance issues, but overall it's faster than Franken and FPM. I want it to be a complete runtime/server. There's still a lot of work to be done; the project is open to pull requests, suggestions, or any help will be welcome.
