# Physicists bridge worlds of quantum matter

## Summary

Researchers at Heidelberg University developed a unified theory connecting two previously separate paradigms in quantum physics: mobile and static impurity behavior in many-body systems. The framework explains how quasiparticles (Fermi polarons) emerge even when impurities are extremely heavy, bridging the gap between the established quasiparticle model and Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe. The theory reveals that heavy impurities perform slight motions as their environment adjusts, opening an energy gap that allows quasiparticle formation. This breakthrough has direct applications for experiments with ultracold atomic gases, two-dimensional materials, and novel semiconductors.
