# Postgres for Ephemeral Environments: A Method to Keep Data Persistent

**[Neon](https://daily.dev/sources/neontech)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Persistent non-production environments come with significant overhead: configuration drift, seed data maintenance, concurrency issues, and growing costs. Ephemeral environments solve most of these problems but introduce a new challenge — databases need data, and loading seed data into each short-lived environment is slow and hard to maintain. Neon's serverless Postgres platform addresses this with copy-on-write database branching: each ephemeral environment gets an instant clone of a parent 'source of truth' branch, pre-populated with test data, without duplicating storage. Branches are created in milliseconds regardless of dataset size, can be reset with a single API call, and are automatically deleted when a PR is merged. The workflow integrates with GitHub Actions and scales to hundreds of parallel environments affordably thanks to scale-to-zero idle behavior.
