Microsoft's Postgres Developer Tools team presents an evolution of their VS Code extension for PostgreSQL management, now expanding to Cursor IDE and CLI-based AI agent workflows. The extension (over 500K installs) includes an object explorer, query editor with IntelliSense, EXPLAIN ANALYZE visualizer, ERD diagrams, and performance dashboards. A new standalone MCP (Model Context Protocol) server decouples database tooling from VS Code-specific APIs, enabling the same Postgres tools to work across Cursor, GitHub Copilot CLI, and future AI terminals like Codex and Claude Code. A new CLI tool called pgsql-tools packages the MCP server with secure connection profile management (OS keyring storage). Demos show natural language database exploration, query plan analysis, schema diagramming, and agentic database refactoring tasks via Copilot CLI.
