An embedded engineer needed IP65 compliance for a product with exposed humidity and pressure sensors, all within a $15 budget. Standard IP-rated enclosures were not viable since the sensors must be exposed to the environment. The solution came from Sensirion's SHT2x humidity sensor paired with a microporous filter cap (1.5 µm pore size) that provides IP67 protection out of the box. By finding a compatible pressure sensor that fits under the same filter cap, both sensors achieved IP67 protection, exceeding the IP65 requirement at low cost. The post also explains the IP rating system (IEC 60529), including what each digit means and the specific test conditions for IP65 water resistance.
