## Summary

Collabora and the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced a collaboration to bring Wayland and X11 graphics performance to the Raspberry Pi using its VideoCore hardware. Updates to the Weston compositor offload graphical operations to the BCM2835 VideoCore, reducing CPU and memory usage. XWayland improvements allow X11 apps to run faster on Wayland than under native X on the Pi. Source code and Debian packages were made available for Raspbian.

## Questions this post answers

### How does Wayland use the Raspberry Pi's VideoCore hardware for graphics compositing?

The Weston compositor was updated to offload the majority of graphical operations to the Raspberry Pi's BCM2835 VideoCore, keeping both CPU and memory usage as low as possible. XWayland was also improved so that legacy X11 applications run faster on Wayland than they would under native X on the Raspberry Pi. Debian binary packages are available for Raspbian.
