# Programming books that rewired my brain

**[bigboxSWE](https://daily.dev/sources/bigboxswe)** · 5 min read · 309 upvotes · 13 comments

## Summary

Three foundational programming books are recommended for developers with at least one year of experience: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) teaches computational thinking and functional programming concepts through Scheme; Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective provides deep understanding of how computers work from assembly to networks; and Designing Data-Intensive Applications explains how to build scalable systems. The key advice is to read technical books after gaining practical experience, as retrospective learning helps concepts click better than passive consumption.

> I feel classic books like those only rewires brains of those who is ready for the upgrade. Others won't see the point to make it past first chapters of SICP. I'd add to the list:
> - the dragon book (Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools)
> - Programming Languages: Design and Implementation by Terrence W. Pratt and Marvin V. Zelkowitz
> - Robert Martin's books (like Clean Architecture)
>
> Those are complitely opinionated, but definitely felt "rewired" after reading.

> it is so interesting I love to read technical things, but talking about the time that you need to read a book and understand it, what is the methodology, Are there a methodology, I think than I have enough lecture comprehension but maybe not, I see that people read a lot. What is the secret for this kind of book? I mean I read the little prince and took me 5 hours and only has 135 pages.
