# Prospero: a new coding harness for a more civilized age

**[null program](https://daily.dev/sources/nullprogram)** · 10 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Prospero is a new AI coding harness built in C++ with a Dear ImGui interface, designed to use far fewer resources than other harnesses. It uses around two orders of magnitude fewer resources than other harnesses while keeping features like subagents, MCP support, and desktop control for testing GUI apps. Configuration lives in a plain INI file at ~/.config/prospero/prospero.ini, supporting includes by URL. Every operation has a deadline, and entire process trees are stopped together to avoid stray builds. Prospero ships as a free Community Edition and a paid Professional Edition with built-in headless engines for remote deployment.

## Questions this post answers

### What is Prospero and how is it different from other AI coding harnesses?

Prospero is a coding harness for AI agents, written in C++ with a Dear ImGui interface, that uses roughly two orders of magnitude less memory than typical web-stack-based harnesses. It supports subagents, Git worktrees, MCP, desktop control for GUI testing, and plain INI configuration instead of JSON. It ships with no built-in model providers; you connect it to something like llama.cpp, OpenRouter, Anthropic, or OpenAI APIs.

_Developers evaluating lightweight alternatives to heavy AI coding agents can track new harness releases on daily.dev._

### How does Prospero prevent an AI agent from hanging indefinitely on a task?

Prospero follows a 'never wait forever' design principle where every operation has a deadline. If a permission request isn't answered, it is denied by timeout, and shell commands that exceed their timeout convert into asynchronous background tasks the agent can keep checking on. The only exception is Plan mode, which waits indefinitely for user input.

_Teams relying on long-running coding agents can follow design patterns like this on daily.dev before they get burned by a stuck session._

### What is the difference between the Community Edition and Professional Edition of Prospero?

The Community Edition is free on GitHub but lacks built-in headless engines, limiting remote deployments, and shows a reminder nag. The Professional Edition, sold on itch.io for a nominal fee, is a DRM-free download with free updates and includes built-in headless engines for x86/x86-64 and ARM64 on macOS, Windows, and Linux, enabling one-click remote deployments and sessions.

_Developers comparing free versus paid tiers of coding agent tools can weigh these trade-offs via daily.dev._

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 100 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-31).

**TL;DR:** Reactions are split between admiration for the tiny footprint and snappy native C++/ImGui interface, and skepticism about licensing, naming, platform support, and whether a solo-built harness can keep pace with a fast-moving ecosystem; a long tangent also debated whether Claude subscriptions can even be used with third-party harnesses.

**Sentiment:** 30% positive · 40% mixed · 30% skeptical

**The case for**

- Several people were impressed by the tiny binary size (5MB) and instant, snappy performance compared to heavier harnesses.
- The native C++/Dear ImGui approach was praised as a refreshing, intentional departure from 'slopware' and JS-bloated tooling.
- Some saw it as solid, enterprise-grade engineering that avoids the memory/OOM issues of JS-based agent UIs.

**The pushback**

- Confusion over licensing (Unlicense plus a separate Community/Professional split) left some users unsure what's actually open source.
- No Linux binary despite claims of cross-platform support, requiring build-from-source.
- Skepticism that a single-developer C++ project can keep up with fast-moving, team-built harness alternatives or be easily extended via plugins.
- Concerns about name collision with other 'Prospero' projects causing confusion.
- Debate over whether C++ is even a wise choice for an agent GUI given how hard rich text/markdown rendering is compared to HTML/CSS/JS.
- A big side-debate over whether using third-party harnesses at all risks violating Anthropic's Claude subscription terms.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Praise for the lightweight, fast native UI is counterbalanced by pointed questions about licensing clarity, platform support, naming, and long-term maintainability, plus an extended tangent on Claude subscription terms unrelated to the product itself.

**Hottest debate:** Whether building an agent GUI in C++ (versus web tech) is a smart, principled choice or a questionable one given how hard rich text/markdown rendering is outside a browser engine.

**Open questions**

- Does Prospero solve the accidental Y/N keypress and multi-agent coordination annoyances raised about CLI harnesses?
- Is there a plan for 'swarm'/group control of multiple agents?
- Which GitHub repo/release corresponds to the Community vs. Professional edition under the Unlicense?
- Does it support local sandboxing/isolation of the working environment?
- Will a native Linux binary be provided, or is build-from-source the only option?

**Highlights**

> First time I see a software licensed with the Unlicense. I thought it meant the license was missing on GitHub but, no, it's an actual license called the Unlicense. But then there is the Community and Pro edition so which is which on GitHub? Is the pro version hidden somewhere? Plus a c++ code base in 2026. I think modern c++ can be made quite safe but I need some claims that it's taken seriously which I don't see. I'm confused. edit: I'm getting down voted here and no-one is telling me what I said wrong. These are my first impressions on the project. I think it's valuable feedback. Please reply and explain why I'm wrong instead of just down voting.

> Couple of notes. If a system is outputting text for humans to read, it’s not “serious data”. It’s megabytes. You can go out today and buy an off-the-shelf Apple desktop with half a terabyte of ram. My five year old laptop has 64Gb. Secondly, the sweet spot is Rust backend with typescript front end. The serious part isn’t the size of the data, it’s juggling the processes on one end, and pretty presentation to the human on the other. I’m using Tauri. As we get crates to do markdown with automatic language formatting, tables, etc I’d expect the whole thing to be written Rust

> OK, I like this in concept a LOT. I especially like that it's efficient and headless with an attachable GUI. But I don't like how opinionated it is: "Therefore Prospero prime design principle: Never wait forever. Every operation has a deadline. This decision influences everything." I respect that opinion, but I don't share it, and therefore an entire coding harness developed around that opinion is not helpful for me.

> Strings are trivial in C++. Drawing 2D graphics is fine, many libraries do it. Creating old-fashioned component frameworks (like Qt, JUCE, etc) is easy. I implemented all those things on my own, decades before AI. The hard bit is when you have complex, responsive layouts involving text. (And styling it) Something seemingly trivial like an agent-style chat containing markdown text blocks, where it's expandable and smoothly scrollable is insanely difficult. The only frameworks that do this well are browsers, and the amount of horrible, horrible logic hidden inside them to make it look easy is hard to believe. And since in many agents you're also going to want to display actual HTML, unless you're going to embed a browser engine in your C++ library, that's just not doable.
