Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) offers significant advantages over Proxmox's built-in vzdump backups for home lab setups running multiple LXCs and VMs. Key benefits include incremental snapshots and deduplication that dramatically reduce storage consumption, live restoration and file-level recovery tools, and sync tasks that enable 3-2-1 backup workflows across local and remote PBS nodes. The author runs PBS on an inexpensive N100 mini-PC with 4TB of HDDs and uses Tailscale to connect a remote offsite PBS instance. While vzdump remains a viable option for newcomers, PBS becomes near-essential for more complex Proxmox environments.
