# Python Typing Survey 2026: AI Tools and the Shifting Checker Landscape

## Summary

Meta's 2026 Python Typing Survey gathered 1,794 responses and found checker choice shifting fast while type-hint adoption stayed flat. Frequent type hint use held between 85.5% and 88.0% across three years. The share saying types make AI-generated code more reliable rose from 18.5% in 2025 to 38.4%, and 61.0% used AI for at least one typing-related task. Missing library type information remained the top difficulty (65.1%), with Django, SQLAlchemy, Pydantic, NumPy, pandas, and Polars named by respondents. Half of respondents who reported their checkers selected more than one, and 83.3% of Pyrefly users also run a second checker.

## Questions this post answers

### Why do developers use multiple Python type checkers like Mypy and Pyrefly together?

Teams split work between checkers because of differing IDE support, speed, and feature coverage. One respondent's team uses Pyright locally since it fully understands niche typing patterns, then runs Pyrefly in CI/CD and only falls back to Pyright on files where Pyrefly fails, to improve check performance. Another team mixes checkers because members use different IDEs but relies on Mypy for CI linting.

### What's the most common difficulty Python developers report with type checking?

Missing type information in third-party libraries is the leading difficulty, reported by 65.1% of 1,486 respondents in a 2026 survey. Another 44.6% said the type system can't describe everything their code does. Respondents most often named Django, SQLAlchemy, Pydantic, NumPy, pandas, and Polars as libraries with inadequate or inaccurate type stubs.

### How are AI coding tools changing the way developers use Python type checkers?

AI tools increasingly write type hints and interact directly with checkers: 42.5% of 1,517 respondents had AI tools write type hints, and 24.4% said an AI coding tool invokes their checker directly. Among those whose AI tool runs the checker, 61.6% also used AI to fix the resulting errors, versus 19.3% of everyone else. Some respondents noted AI agents overuse 'object' types or spam '#type: ignore' comments.

> That 29.8% saying they're not sure whether types help AI-assisted coding are giving the honest answer to a badly posed question, because types narrow what counts as a wrong answer before it gets written, so the agent never gets the chance to write it. An agent that returns object because the annotation allows it will pass the checker and still be useless, so the type has to be tight enough that the lazy version fails. When respondents complain about ignore comments piling up, that is the agent widening the type to make the error go away. A passing check like that tells you...
