# Qualcomm QCE Driver On The Chopping Block With ~48x Slower Than Armv8 Crypto Extensions

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux kernel crypto expert Eric Biggers (Google) is proposing the complete removal of the Qualcomm Crypto Engine (QCE) driver from the Linux kernel after benchmarks revealed it is over 100x slower in wall-clock time and uses 50x more CPU cycles than the ARMv8 Crypto Extensions it was meant to accelerate. The driver was previously marked 'broken' and 'harmful'; the new findings show it actually consumes more CPU than simply doing hashing directly on the CPU. A patch removing all ~3,500 lines of the QCE driver has been submitted, though at least one developer wants to keep it. Greg Kroah-Hartman has been brought in to weigh in on the decision.
