Researchers demonstrate a 25-level quantum system (qudit) using a single trapped barium-137 ion, achieving high-fidelity state preparation and readout across all 25 internal levels. The study investigates how errors scale with qudit dimensionality, identifies primary error sources affecting quantum coherence, and implements a 3-qubit Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm and a 4-qubit Toffoli gate using just one trapped ion. The findings suggest that large-dimensional qudit architectures offer a promising path toward more hardware-efficient quantum computing.
