Quartermaster, a Virginia-based startup, has raised $43 million in a Series A round to expand its SmartMast product — a ruggedized sensor package for ship masts that collects real-time maritime data. The system is positioned as a major upgrade over the existing AIS standard, which is opt-in, easily spoofed, and vulnerable to fraud. SmartMast-equipped ships have already covered 10 million square miles of ocean across 600+ vessels. The platform aims to serve governments, shipping companies, marine autonomy researchers, and scientists by creating a distributed intelligence layer across the world's oceans. Funding will primarily go toward hiring engineers, with the company noting that maritime computer vision remains a largely untapped field.
