Databricks is launching Query Tags in Public Preview for SQL Warehouses, allowing users to attach custom key-value metadata to every SQL execution. Tags are recorded in the Query History System Table and can be queried with standard SQL. Key use cases include cost attribution across teams sharing a warehouse, tracing slow queries back to specific dbt models or BI dashboards, and labeling ad-hoc analyst work by project or environment. Partner tools like dbt inject tags automatically, while Power BI, Tableau, and custom apps via the Python Connector or SQL Statement Execution API support manual tagging at connection or statement level. A single SET QUERY_TAGS SQL statement covers ad-hoc sessions.
