# Developers Are Gaming Their GitHub Profiles

## Summary

GitHub contribution graphs have become a flawed hiring signal that developers are gaming with automated tools. Five popular tools with 18,000+ combined stars exist to manipulate these graphs, ranging from playful pixel art generators to sophisticated commit-faking scripts that backdate activity. The tools exist because recruiters use contribution graphs as quick visual proxies for developer competence, despite the metric being fundamentally broken—it measures commit frequency rather than code quality, ignores private repos and non-GitHub work, and rewards noise over meaningful contributions. The real problem isn't the gaming itself, but that contribution graphs were never designed as hiring signals and shouldn't be used to evaluate developers.

> I can admit (never used the scripts/bots) but the pressure to have a full green grid on github contributions was some wild pressure. But it wears off once you realise it never was genuine and you're creating a faux expectation to employers/recruiters

> I once was pressured into making a contribution daily until it burned me out. I then realized that I have to pause and just make contributions when I have a project in mind and not the other way around. I am human after all. There's life outside our code.

> Tbh I never really cared about these graphs and just enjoyed the platform itself. I would rather judge the ability to present ones work by looking through the GitHub, maybe also their public appearance by their accounts and their GitHub Readme.

> You don't need bots; you just need a repo, a file, and git backdated commits. Heck, I can even do something like this with just pure git and a simple-ish bash script:

> I mean I understand why devs would do this, because... recruiters 🙄
> Check my chart, there's no way I'm using these scripts! 🤣

> And this is why we don't let recruiters do the ***actual*** tech interviews.
> Because they can't code lol
