The 4GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 go up $25 each. The 8GB models rise $50. The 16GB Pi 5 now costs $299.99 — up $100. The Raspberry Pi 500+ jumps $150. Compute Modules see increases ranging from $11.25 to $100 depending on configuration. Founder Eben Upton has attributed this to Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron prioritizing AI datacenter supply over consumer LPDDR4, and has promised the increases will be reversed once memory costs normalize. Whether that happens, and when, is anyone's guess. ## The 3GB model doesn't really solve anything The new 3GB Pi 4 sits at $83.75, between the 2GB at $55 and the 4GB at $100. The problem is that the old recommendation — 2GB for lightweight tasks, 4GB for most real projects — still holds. The 3GB doesn't fit cleanly into either category. You're paying $28 more than the 2GB for RAM you may not need, or saving $16 versus the 4GB while giving up headroom you probably want. It's a product that exists because of supply constraints, not because anyone asked for it. That's fine as far as it goes, but it adds confusion to a lineup that was already getting harder to navigate. ## The broader problem This isn't just a Raspberry Pi story. LPDDR4 costs are hitting the entire single-board computer market. The 16GB Pi 5 at $300 is now in mini PC territory — and even mini PCs have crossed $250 for 8GB configurations. New SBC launches have slowed noticeably across vendors. Smaller manufacturers without Raspberry Pi's microcontroller and industrial revenue streams are in a genuinely difficult position. For hobbyists, the calculus is shifting. Boards that cost $60 two years ago now cost $90+. The Raspberry Pi Zero and ESP32 microcontrollers are looking more attractive for projects that don't need a full OS. Used mini PCs are worth considering for anything that does. Upton's promise that prices will come back down is plausible — memory markets do cycle.
