Socher's framing: this will probably be the smallest compute deal Recursive ever signs. ## Agent count over headcount Recursive has about 25 employees. The company's bet is that automated research loops — not engineers — are the right unit of scale. AWS gets no equity stake here, which sets this apart from recent frontier AI deals where cloud providers have taken ownership positions alongside compute commitments. AWS will co-develop purpose-built infrastructure for Recursive's workloads. The logic is straightforward: if each research loop improves the next one, front-loading compute compounds. Salaries don't. ## What the system actually does Socher's pitch is a "Eureka machine" — an AI that automates scientific discovery end-to-end. The architecture has four components: a knowledge base of existing research, scientific measurement data, simulations, and physical lab experiments, all coordinated by a swarm of agents cycling through ideation, implementation, and validation. He draws a distinction between simple auto-research loops and what he calls true recursive self-improvement (RSI), where the system has full awareness of its own shortcomings and can update its entire training pipeline.
