# Reddit’s r/opensource bans AI projects, and non-English speakers too

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

r/opensource now bans any project that uses AI, is built with AI or is meant for AI. Projects must be at least a year old, actively maintained, have three or more contributors ('subjectively') and an OSI license. Non-English speakers are excluded too, since moderators say they can't tell AI-written text from AI-translated text. Moderator Wolvereness posted the rules on Saturday; by Monday the thread had about 2,700 comments and a net score of zero. Fellow moderator ssddanbrown said they weren't consulted and disagreed with the language rule. A nine-year solo maintainer with over 300 GitHub stars no longer qualifies because the project has one contributor. Users opposed to the rules launched r/TrueOpenSource and r/OpenSourceAIAllowed.

## Questions this post answers

### What are the new rules for posting a project on r/opensource?

Projects must be at least a year old, actively maintained, and have three or more contributors, an existing community, and an OSI license. The rules also ban any project that uses AI, is made by AI, or is intended for AI use, such as MCP servers. Posters need a Reddit account at least a year old with significant activity.

### Why does r/opensource ban non-English speakers from posting?

Moderator Wolvereness stated that non-English speakers must find a different community because moderators cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated text. The rule was announced alongside broader restrictions on AI-built projects, and fellow moderator ssddanbrown publicly said they disagreed with how the language rule was implemented and introduced.

### Are there alternative subreddits to r/opensource after its new anti-AI rules?

Users opposed to the new restrictions created r/TrueOpenSource and r/OpenSourceAIAllowed as alternative communities. Moderator Wolvereness edited the original rules post to encourage these and two other new forums, hoping they would serve as a refuge for people excluded by the policy, including solo maintainers and non-English speakers.
