Before deploying more AI agents, organizations must first redesign their workflows. AI creates business value only when it reaches core products and processes, not when it's layered on top of unchanged operations. The key steps are: map where AI creates disproportionate business value (the 10% of initiatives driving 80% of impact), redesign workflows as human-agent systems rather than individual roles, identify AI super users who can act as workflow designers, align executive teams on governance and decision-making, and measure success through full workflow outcomes rather than isolated task metrics. Research from McKinsey, BCG, Microsoft, PwC, and Deloitte all point to the same conclusion: scattered AI tool adoption without workflow redesign produces little measurable return.
