# Redox OS ring buffers project summary

**[LWN.net](https://daily.dev/sources/lwn)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Redox OS has finished a first phase of a grant-funded project to add io_uring-like ring buffer support at the system task level. This phase wrapped up in September. The team implemented ring buffer machinery for system services and drivers that can support it, plus an io_uring and liburing-like API for applications, which was completed and demonstrated. There was also substantial work on support crates, including an async executor for drivers, and performance improvements to allow much faster switching between applications and their system services.

## Questions this post answers

### Does Redox OS have an io_uring-like API for async I/O?

Yes, Redox OS completed and demonstrated an io_uring and liburing-like API for applications as part of a grant-funded project that finished in September. The project also implemented ring buffer machinery at the system task level for system services and drivers, along with an async executor for drivers and performance improvements for switching between applications and system services.
