Jake Wharton, a Google employee, outlines his personal strategy for eliminating Google as a single point of failure for his data. Rather than abandoning Google services, he keeps them as the source of truth while building redundant backups using rclone for Google Drive, a custom Docker container using Chrome DevTools Protocol for Google Photos originals, ZFS-based home server storage with snapshot policies, and rsync.net for off-site cloud backup with ZFS snapshot replication. NextCloud is used to make the backed-up data accessible. The setup follows the 3-2-1 backup rule and is orchestrated via Docker Compose. Gmail backup remains an unsolved problem.
