# Researchers Develops Carbon Quantum Dots From Organic Waste for Pest Repellent Research

Green Science Alliance researcher Dr. Ryohei Mori has synthesized carbon quantum dots from organic biomass waste (wood, plant, and food waste) and discovered they exhibit pest repellent properties against adult sweet potato whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). This may be the first documented case of carbon quantum dots showing repellent effects. The mechanism is not yet understood — hypotheses include DNA damage via cell membrane penetration, emission of insect-repelling light wavelengths, or photocatalytic effects. Compared to conventional chemical repellents like DEET, these bio-derived quantum dots could be cheaper due to low-cost waste feedstocks and potentially safer due to their natural origin. Further research is planned to clarify the mechanism and evaluate broader agricultural applications.
