Huawei's HarmonyOS has surpassed 55 million devices as of March 2026, adding 23 million in under six months. The growth is driven by HarmonyOS 6 improvements including fluid animations, the Ark engine for better performance and battery life, AI features, and an AI-driven security architecture. HarmonyOS is built on OpenHarmony, an open source base similar to Android's AOSP but independent from it. However, it still relies on proprietary layers and Chinese-only documentation limits global accessibility. Critics have also flagged Huawei spamming open source projects to push HarmonyOS adoption. The milestone signals a potential challenger to the Apple/Google mobile duopoly.
