# Retirement of Kubernetes integration jobs for unsupported Kubernetes versions

**[Istio](https://daily.dev/sources/istio)** · 2 min read · 4 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Istio's Test and Release Working Group is retiring CI integration tests for Kubernetes versions that are end-of-life or nearing EOL, affecting Istio 1.32 and later on the master branch. Previously CI tested a wide range (roughly Kubernetes 1.23 through 1.36); going forward only the actively supported Kubernetes range will be tested, freeing up CI resources. Developers who still need to validate against older Kubernetes versions can run the integration suite locally with kind, using the integ-suite-kind.sh script and checking test-infra commit history for the node image and config previously used in CI.

## Questions this post answers

### Why is Istio dropping CI testing for older Kubernetes versions starting with version 1.32?

Istio's Test and Release Working Group is removing integration tests for Kubernetes versions that are end-of-life or nearing it, limiting CI to the actively supported Kubernetes range. Previously CI tested roughly Kubernetes 1.23 through 1.36; upstream Kubernetes only supports minor releases for about 14 months, and maintaining old node images consumed CI infrastructure and time. This change applies to the master branch, affecting Istio 1.32 and forward.

### How can I test Istio against an older, unsupported Kubernetes version now that CI no longer covers it?

Run the integration suite locally using kind, the same tool Istio's CI relies on. Use the integ-suite-kind.sh script from the istio repository as the entry point, and check the test-infra repository's commit history to find the specific node image and kind-config values previously used for the Kubernetes version you need, replacing --node-image and --kind-config accordingly.

> makes sense given how fast the k8s api surface moves release to release. cert-manager and ingress-nginx trimmed their ci matrices the same way last year once maintaining older kind images cost more than the users asking for them.
