Colin Maykish successfully booted the mainline Linux v7.1-rc6 kernel on a Motorola 68008-based homebrew single-board computer called Mackerel-68k. The board runs at 14 MHz (overclocked from 8 MHz) with just 3.5 MB of RAM, managing to reach userspace and a BusyBox shell despite severe resource constraints. While booting is slow and RAM limits practical use, it demonstrates that the 68008 remains among the oldest CPUs still supported by the modern Linux kernel. The same builder has also run the kernel on 68010 and 68030 chips.
