# Rust on the web is starting to look quite good.

## Summary

An overview of the current state of Rust for web development in 2026, covering frontend, backend, and full-stack frameworks. The Yew framework (React-inspired, virtual DOM, CSR/SSR) is demonstrated with a counter app, built and served using the Trunk bundler. Leptos is covered as a full-stack option with fine-grained reactivity via signals, server functions, and deployment to a VPS with Caddy. Dioxus is highlighted as the author's preferred framework due to its write-once, run-anywhere approach (web, desktop, mobile), RSX DSL, and a shadcn-inspired component library. Desktop Rust frameworks like iced, egui, and GPUI that compile to WebAssembly are also mentioned. The web-sys and wasm-bindgen crates enable interop with browser APIs and JavaScript packages. AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex) are credited for lowering the barrier to working with complex Rust/WASM interop code.

> Rust is genuinely production-grade. Frameworks like Actix Web, Axum, and Rocket are fast, stable, and increasingly well-supported. If you’re building APIs, microservices, or performance-critical systems, Rust is no longer “experimental”—it’s a serious contender.

> Frameworks like Tauri are arguably where Rust shines more clearly than the browser. The WASM angle is cool, but native + webview hybrids are often more practical.

> Rust could be a solid option for backend work. That said, for frontend web dev it’s probably overkill. The direction frontend seems to be heading is toward less JS/TS overall, so introducing an even more complex language doesn’t really solve the core challenges we’re dealing with on the frontend.

> What about the huge chunk of bytecode that they have to ship on the very first request that makes the website's FCP score about 40% in Google Lighthouse? Did they address that?

> I did try to use Rust for web development one time (I know Rust). I will never make the same mistake again. Web dev is already complex enough, no need for compiler who screams at you every time there is a 1% chance that your code might have an error in a hypothetical situation so that you have ro change all your code right now.
