The OpenInfra Foundation has released Kata Containers 4.0, featuring a new Rust-based default runtime called runtime-rs that replaces the original Go runtime. The rewrite delivers improved memory safety, smaller memory footprint, and faster startup times. A new lightweight Rust-based hypervisor called Dragonball, developed by Ant Group, is now the default VM monitor. The release positions Kata Containers as a key runtime for the Kubernetes Agent Sandbox project, enabling secure isolation for AI agents by running each workload in its own lightweight VM. The legacy Go runtime will continue receiving bug and security fixes until Kata Containers 5.0.
