# Rust Update: gRPC Welcomes Tonic!

**[gRPC Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/grpc-blog)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The Tonic gRPC library for Rust has officially been moved into the gRPC Project under the CNCF, with its repository relocated to grpc/grpc-rust. Tonic will keep operating as before in the short term, accepting only bug fixes, while the gRPC team plans to release a new production-ready 'grpc' crate within the next few months as a long-term replacement offering advanced features like connection management, client-side load balancing, and eventually xDS/envoy support for Proxyless Service Mesh. The Tonic codegen interface will remain supported to ease migration. A gRPConf 2026 developer conference is also announced for September 3rd in Mountain View, CA, with an open call for papers.

## Questions this post answers

### What is happening to the Tonic gRPC library for Rust now that it has joined the gRPC Project?

Tonic has been moved into the gRPC Project under the CNCF, with its repository relocated to grpc/grpc-rust. In the short term, Tonic keeps operating as before, only accepting bug fixes and no significant new features. Within the next few months, a new production-ready grpc crate is planned as its long-term replacement, supporting the existing Tonic codegen interface for easier upgrades.

_Track how gRPC's Rust tooling evolves before migrating a production Tonic setup, with updates on daily.dev._

### Will I need to rewrite my application code when migrating from Tonic to the new grpc crate for Rust?

No rewrite should be necessary for generated code, because the new grpc crate will continue supporting the Tonic codegen interface. This lets existing Tonic users switch to the new transport implementation without changing how their service definitions and client code are generated, easing the transition to the production-ready replacement.

_Rust developers planning gRPC upgrades can follow migration details as they land via daily.dev._
