SABC+'s streaming platform collapsed during South Africa's FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico, locking out viewers for much of the first half. The broadcaster reported 477,000 peak concurrent users — nearly three times its previous record — alongside 18 million attempted logins. The outage was triggered by a content-encryption update pushed just before kick-off, which forced a mass re-login that overwhelmed the system. SABC has apologised and says it is strengthening platform capacity and login infrastructure ahead of upcoming matches, with South Africa's next game against Czechia on 18 June expected to draw similar or larger audiences.
