# Samsung bans smart TV apps that share users’ internet connections with strangers

**[TechCrunch](https://daily.dev/sources/tc)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Security research by Norwegian firm Mnemonic reveals that several Samsung smart TV apps — including a Pac-Man game featured in Samsung's 'Editor's Choice' section — contain residential proxy (resproxy) SDK code that can silently route strangers' internet traffic through users' home connections. The code, including Bright Data's SDK, activates upon user consent but can persist in the background even after the app is closed. A server-side code change could theoretically activate hundreds of millions of TVs as botnet exit nodes. After TechCrunch contacted Samsung, the company announced it is banning new app registrations with proxy functionality and will remove existing apps containing resproxy components. The research also found evidence the proxy network was used for large-scale LinkedIn scraping and AI training data collection. LG made a similar ban last month after 42% of its app store apps were found to contain resproxy code.
